California Sets Goal Of 100 Percent Renewable Electric Power By 2045

Currently, the state's RPS requires half of all electricity delivered by utilities to come from renewable sources of energy by 2030.

California has almost 54,000 active wells, some of them close to urbanized areas in Southern California and the Central Valley, according to state data.

Data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows California is ranked sixth among states in crude oil production and 15th in natural gas, though production of both has declined since the mid-1980s.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill mandating the electricity target on Monday.

At the same time, California has grappled with an oversupply of renewable energy, especially at noon when the sun is at its highest, leading the state to offload solar energy to other states. Nevertheless, pursuing 100% renewable energy has never been more important, as we get closer to entering a time that scientists say will be the point of no return from irreversible climate damage.

The political reality slowing the transition to a global economy powered by clean energy rather than fossil fuels resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC and has dismissed climate change a hoax. By 2030, 60% of the total energy required must come from renewable resources, and by 2045, state legislature hopes to have achieved a 100% renewable power use.

A UN tally of all the local carbon-reduction initiatives so far reveals "encouraging potential" but will ultimately fall short without deeper commitments from national governments, UN Environment chief Erik Solheim said Monday.

#SB100 and this executive order put California on a path to meet the goals of Paris and beyond.

Here's what we know about this new era for California.

"Today we're setting a marker that will be remembered by future generations", de Leon said.

The executive order signed by Brown directs the state to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045 and net negative greenhouse gas emissions after that. It also could involve new technologies such as carbon capture sequestration, in which carbon emissions are captured at their source and fed underground.

Senate Bill 100 raises the state's already ambitious goals for producing electricity from wind, solar and other green sources. Brown, surrounded by lawmakers and activists including Assembly members Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, of San Diego, second from left, Ken Cooley, of Rancho Cordova, third from left and billionaire activist Tom Steyer, right, signed SB100 which sets a goal of phasing out all fossil fuels from the state's electricity sector by 2045.

California's governor and host Jerry Brown, whose crusade for clean energy started in the 1970s, set the tone by approving landmark legislation Monday that commits his state to purging Carbon dioxide from its electricity grid by 2045.
