Carolinas brace for the worst as monstrous Hurricane Florence nears

Florence is now been downgraded to a Category 3 hurricane, is expected to make landfall in the US, Thursday as an "extremely dangerous" hurricane according to the National Hurricane Center.

The hurricane center's projected track Wednesday had Florence hovering off the southern North Carolina coast from Thursday night until landfall Saturday morning or so, about a day later than previously expected.

It will strike with torrential rains, powerful winds and potentially devastating flooding.

People who thought they were safe from the onslaught of Hurricane Florence began boarding up and Georgia's governor declared a state of emergency Wednesday as uncertainty over the path of the monster storm spread worry along the Southeastern coast.

The NHC said the first tropical storm-force winds of at least 39 miles per hour (63kph) would hit the region early on Thursday with the storm's centre reaching the coast on Friday.
