Jerome Boateng: 'I turned down Manchester United move'

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng personally called Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho to reject the chance of returning to the Premier League.

Mourinho really, really wanted a central defender before the window slammed shut with a bunch of names linked with a transfer to Old Trafford.

"I did not want just to get away from Bayern, but I was thrilled to try a new challenge".

Attempts to sign Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld and Leicester City's Harry Maguire failed and Boateng was one of a number of other centre-backs to be strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer.

After the end of the World Cup in Russian Federation, nothing kept the football world buzzing like club transfers.

Jose Mourinho arrived back at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester on Wednesday fresh from watching football from the stands rather than the touchlines during the global break.

"Neville the pundit on Pogba would say, "He's a talented player but I want to see more consistency and leadership", he told The Times.

And Boateng confirmed that the former Frankfurt coach was one of the factors keeping him.

He told the Bild that he had "enquiries" from Man United and PSG but opted to remain in Germany because everything was "in place".

One of these big clubs was Manchester United.

"I phoned Jose Mourinho and told him that his interest honoured me and thanked him [for trying so hard to try and bring me to United]. Everything has to fall in place to top this club, if I do it. [Bayern Munich boss] Niko Kovac gave me the feeling that I am very important for him and the club".

This summer's World Cup saw Pogba showcase exactly why Mourinho splashed out £89m to sign him from Juventus in 2016.
