Mirrorless Lexus ES Going On Sale In Japan This October

In Japanese markets, the 2019 Lexus ES will replace the traditional side mirrors with a new digital camera system. A new Digital Outer Mirror option will debut on the Lexus ES in the Japanese market this October, and it uses exterior cameras and screens inside the auto to replace the traditional side mirror.

The wing mirrors are replaced with small cameras mounted on the outside of the auto, with small screens displaying the feed from these cameras on the inside.

There's also the enhanced view software, which displays the footage on the monitors inside the cabin in high quality even at night and inclement weather.

The sedan still has stalks sticking out of its sides, but their lower-profile design reduces aerodynamic drag for fuel efficiency and cuts down on wind noise.

The system automatically enhances the corresponding area - left, right or behind - when the turn signals are activated, or when the transmission is put into reverse.

We're surprised it's taken this long for manufacturers to catch on, but Lexus is finally offering digital wing mirrors as an option for the upcoming ES replacement model.

Along with these features, Lexus says the camera lenses are heated and the housings keep raindrops from collecting on them.

The digital mirrors will make their debut on the new ES, which will go on sale in late October.
