Six dead in Bakersfield shooting

An unidentified gunman shot and killed five people in a series of shootings on Wednesday in Southern California before taking his own life, police said.

Sheriff's deputies say a husband and wife went to a business, and the husband shot and killed his wife, as well as a man inside the business. There is no information yet if the other four were related to the attacker.

He then chased another man from the trucking company before he shot and killed him in front of a nearby sports store.

Three people were killed there and the shooter, armed with a large caliber hand gun, fled. He then hijacked a vehicle with a woman and child in it.

A deputy eventually confronted the suspect in a parking lot, at which point the gunman shot himself in the chest, Sheriff Youngblood said.

The identities of the attacker and the victims have not been made public yet. The woman and child were able to escape.

"We have six deceased, one is the suspect and five are victims", said Lieutenant Mark King of the Kern County sheriff's office after the shooting in the city of Bakersfield. Officials said they will interview about 30 witnesses. The deputy who confronted the man was wearing a body camera.

"I'm certainly speculating right now", Youngblood said.

"Obviously, these are not random shootings", Youngblood told KERO-TV.

The man pulled over after a deputy confronted him with a firearm and then shot himself dead. "This is highly unusual", he said. The relation between the suspect and these two victims was unclear.
