Trump comments sting in Puerto Rico amid slow storm recovery

20,000 pallets of water bottles were found left unused in a runway in Ceiba, Puerto Rico, in the aftermath of the devastating Hurricane Maria, CBS News has reported.

Shortly after Maria hit past year, Trump visited Puerto Rico and was widely criticized for tossing paper towels to storm victims in a manner seen by many as insensitive to the scope of the disaster.

"I think probably the hardest one we had by far was Puerto Rico because of the island nature", Trump said.

"It's 2,975 people, and they're still calling it an estimate - 2,975 people that will never see the light of day, and many of them died because of what was done by the administration and that was silently approved by most of the political class in Puerto Rico", Cruz told CNN earlier this month.

Per CNN, the higher figure is "based on the findings of researchers from George Washington University in a study commissioned by the USA commonwealth's government".

"I ignore them because none of them make sense", said Michelle Cruz, a 48-year-old airline worker whose mother died in December from septicemia after contracting an infection in a hospital during surgery after Maria.

He said the reaction showed the world "has just gone crazy" and insisted he was simply illustrating her behaviour on the day. He also said his wife and children were subjected to threats on their Instagram pages as a result of the cartoon.

During times of trouble and strife, the American people look to their president for guidance and reassurance that the government can handle a crisis, but as Hurricane Florence comes barreling toward the Carolinas, they won't be getting any of that from President Trump, Seth Meyers said on Wednesday's Late Night.

"I actually think it was one of the best jobs that's ever been done", he said.

That reignited a longstanding feud between the mayor and Trump, who fired back calling her "totally incompetent" and saying the US government "did an unappreciated great job in Puerto Rico". Presumably, few Puerto Rico residents, many of whom were without electricity or even water for months, were contacted during that poll.

Puerto Rico's governor last month raised the USA territory's official death toll from Hurricane Maria from 64 to 2,975.

The fact that Puerto Rico is an island complicates the response, and its poor fiscal health, as noted by Mr. Trump, were also factors that bear mention.

Survey respondents gave higher marks to the Puerto Rican government, Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, the federal government and municipal governments. "Our basic infrastructure was devastated, thousands of our people lost their lives and many others still struggle".
