It's available in six colours - white, black, blue, yellow, coral, and red - and its edges are made of aluminium rather than the iPhone XS' "surgical grade steel".

Apple surprised with a third smartphone, the "lower-end" iPhone XR ($749).

The crème de la crème of this year's crop are the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max, and Apple is clearly betting on bigger equating to better with these new models.

Apple has unveiled the 5.8-inch OLED screen iPhone XS, which it says is "the most handsome phone" with a notch Apple has ever made.

"They have finally added a larger-screen phone so that they can directly compete with the Galaxy Note9 products", Gartner analyst Annette Zimmermann said at the event at Apple's Silicon Valley headquarters, referring to rival Samsung Electronics, which has led the trend toward big-screen phones."The larger screen will be very important in China to turn around the trend there, because they have lost some share in the last few years, partly because of screen size". It's a personalised version of the Animoji tech it revealed a year ago.

"[The] iPhone XS is packed with next-generation technologies and is a huge step forward for the future of the smartphone", said Apple marketing head Phil Schiller. "I'll have to sell off both", joked one user on the platform.

The smaller of the two-the Xs-has a 5.8-inch screen, the same size as last year's iPhone X, while the Xs Max has a whopping 6.5-inch screen-the largest of any iPhone to date, by a wide margin.

But this time around each new model takes inspiration from the iPhone X, which means edge-to-edge screens and no home button.

China says world trade system not flawless , needs reform
Such a meeting could take place in Washington or Beijing, though the timing is unclear, according to informed sources. The trade war has already contributed to sell-offs in China's stock markets and currency.

But, as rumoured beforehand, it will be more affordable than the premium models. With two phone models starting at $999 or higher in the US, Apple appears to be taking advantage of a strong US economy, low unemployment, and rising household wealth. The median United States household income rose for a third straight year in 2017 to the highest on record since 1967 by one measure, U.S. government data showed on Wednesday.

Apple's new iPhone Xs and Xr models represent the next iteration of the company's previous iPhone X model it debuted a year ago. The Apple Watch Series 4 has improved its heart monitoring capabilities from previous models.

As for those of you living outside China, Apple says the dual SIM function won't work immediately. The watch will also monitor for irregular heartbeats and can detect when the wearer has fallen, the company said. "A lot of people have [abnormal heart rhythms] who don't have the symptoms".

Apple - like Google, Samsung and other big tech companies - has lately been talking up a newfound interest in digital health and limiting excess screen time.

"This update really establishes the company's increasing efforts to push the watch as a serious medical device", he said of Apple.

Unveiled at the company's Gather Round event in Cupertino, it will be available soon after the also new iPhone XS and XS Max.

Apple likes surprises, but don't expect the first Apple auto to rise from the floor of the Steve Jobs Theater.

We know Apple has long given China special treatment.
