Donald Trump claims '3,000 people did not die' in Puerto Rico hurricane

Red Sox manager Alex Cora addressed President Donald Trump's comments on Thursday after the President tweeted he doubted the death toll in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria hit a year ago.

An independent study commissioned by the Puerto Rican government estimates 2,975 people died as a result of the hurricane, but Trump said that number is false. But that toll should have at least another 1,000 added to it because that's the number of people who died due to debris exposure. "When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths", he tweeted.

"As time went by it did not go up by much", Trump wrote. "Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000".

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz was a particularly aggressive critic of Trump in the days and weeks following the hurricane; her response to Trump's tweet today was no different. "Your lack of respect is appalling!". Meanwhile, the Trump administration's response to Hurricane Maria faced even more criticism Wednesday after the publication of new photos showing millions of bottles of water meant for hurricane victims still sitting unused on a tarmac almost a year after the hurricane made landfall. She then added, "It's sad to me that a natural disaster has to get political, I don't think President Trump is exclusively to blame for what happened, Puerto Rico had a number of its own problems before Maria even hit, they were filing for bankruptcy". That is only an estimate, however, since they did not study how each individual died, although they hope to conduct that study in the future.

"You can question maybe the methodology, that's fine, but to cast doubt on an entire study because it doesn't suit your political narrative and because you think hundreds of deaths are about you, that dishonors the living and the dead", she said.

Hurricane Maria killed up to 3,000 people-if not more-making it the deadliest storm in USA history.

The report said numerous deaths occurred weeks later because of devastating damage to the Caribbean island's electrical grid that curbed treatment for those with life-threatening injuries or medical conditions. "I don't think it's bad to say we could have done better in Puerto Rico".

Trump said Wednesday that his administration is prepared for Hurricane Florence, a storm barrelling toward the Carolina coastline, and insisted that his administration's widely panned response to the devastation in Puerto Rico a year ago was an 'unappreciated great job'.

Noah also cited the report, but did a take on a new "sh***storm Trump", and had mock stand-ups from various weatherpeople and newspeople, who treated the President as though he were a storm threatening the US.

Especially upset were GOP politicians in Florida, a state with a substantial Puerto Rican population. It took more than 11 months, for example, to fully restore electricity. At the time, the government's death toll stood at 64.
