Rockfall at Navagio Beach in Zakynthos injures tourists

The landslide occurred Thursday on the Navagio Beach, or Shipwreck Beach, on the northwestern coast of the island.

A section of a cliff has fallen onto a popular beach on the western Greek island of Zakynthos, capsizing boats and injuring seven people, authorities said.

"So far, we haven't found any trapped people but we will continue searching", a fire brigade official said.

The whole beach is surrounded by steep cliffs and can only be reached by boat.

Rescue teams with sniffer dogs have reportedly been dispatched to help local authorities search for the missing.

There were at least seven people injured in the rockfall, but according to coastguard officials, none of them received life-threatening injuries. She was hospitalised together with her husband and two children, who suffered minor injuries.

Lynette Bridges, 58, said her tour boat had just pulled up on Zante's Shipwreck Beach when an enormous sheet of stone crashed into the sea, capsizing boats and flooding the crowded sands.

"There was a noise and a small piece of rock fell, then a second bigger and finally a third big piece of rock that during the fall created a sea whirlpool that overturned the boats", one eyewitness said.
