Student killed in twin bomb attack near Afghanistan girls' school

The provincial governor's spokesman Attaullah Khogyani said, over 165 persons have also been injured in the bomb attack on protesters.

Earlier it was reported that in the Afghan province of Nangarhar, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device in a crowd of demonstrators.

Officials and elders said Tuesday's attack targeted a gathering to protest against a police commander. No other group immediately claimed responsibility, but both Taliban insurgents and the Islamic State group are active in eastern Afghanistan, especially in Nangarhar province.

Afghanistan's parliamentary elections are due in October this year. The wounded were cared for in the corridors, the more seriously ill were transported to the central hospital in Jalalabad. The Taliban issued a statement denying involvement.

The death toll could be higher and the number of injured is estimated to be more than 100.

In recent days, Taliban fighters killed almost 60 members of the security forces in a spate of attacks in the country's north, and threatened a provincial capital for the second time in as many months.

"One blast went off at the entrance of Malika Omaira girls' school in the morning, killing a 14-year-old boy and wounding four other people".

In addition, two air strikes were carried out in Baghlan, another northern province on Tuesday, following six the day before and USA advisers were on the ground supporting Afghan troops, the spokesman added.

Ghulam Mohammad Balkhi, deputy spokesman for the Afghan army's 209 Corps, said at least 30 Taliban fighters were killed in the joint operation.
