Amir Khan beats Vargas in unanimous points decision

Colombian Vargas (29-4-2, 14 KOs), 29, who is based in Canada, began looking defensively sound, and it was soon clear this was not going to be another wipe out like Lo Greco.

It was a clear and unanimous points victory against a tough but moderate opponent, but Khan was knocked down in the process and was noticeably exhausted in the later stages of the 12-round contest at welterweight.

Immediately after disposing off Columbian Samuel Vargas on Saturday night (Sunday in Manila), former junior welterweight champion Amir Khan reiterated his preference to fight Filipino legend Many Paquiao next probably in December this year or February next year. Thrilling, exciting, but always vulnerable. Goossen will surely look to bolster his fighter's defence before any meeting with Brook or Pacquiao and with Khan intent on competing again this year, time for preparing for such a step up in opponent is minimal.

Khan needed to climb off the canvas to beat Vargas, who a couple of times managed to crash through his defence and land heavy shots. Vargas somehow kept his feet under a series of blows, but Khan appeared to tire and the fight became a slog, with neither man willing to go for broke. And late on, Khan sensibly moved away from trouble, boxing close to the ropes and thrusting himself into sporadic attacks, notably finding his target when a right hand sent Vargas back to the ropes in the ninth.

It might be the right time for the defender to hang his boots and join the Sarri's coaching staff at the Stamford Bridge. We will play against a very physical team, so I think it we want to get points, we need a very good performance".

Pochettino's side ended talk of a Wembley hoodoo when they beat Jurgen Klopp's team 4-1 last October and he is not expecting a repeat of the disappointing performance at Vicarage Road.

Khan used to train with Pacquiao, who holds a version of the WBA welterweight title, at Freddie Roach's gym in LA. Khan staggered backward but was saved by the bell once again. Hopefully I get a good win against Vargas, a spectacular win, then hopefully some big fight at the end of the year, Brook, Pacquiao or whoever, the Olympic silver medalist averred. "Kell wants the fight and I know Amir will fight him".

"I want to fight before the end of the year so this was a great warm-up fight for me". Who do you want me to fight next?

The decision was not in doubt, but many were left unsure whether this performance shows Khan can become one of the leading lights at welterweight.
