Tropical Depression Isaac drenches Puerto Rico, sparks power outages

Hurricane Helene is forecast to weaken over the eastern Atlantic Ocean, and interests in the Azores islands should monitor the storm's progress.

As of Tuesday evening, this storm is a Category Four and is expected to remain strong as it heads towards the coast of North Carolina. It is moving northwest at 15 miles per hour, according to the NHC's update at 11 a.m. Sept 12.

As the storm continues toward Southeastern North Carolina, it will bring life-threatening storm surges, flooding and risky waves to the coast, the briefing said. Current estimates have Isaac passing nearly 150 miles south of St. Croix early Friday morning.

According to the NHC 11 p.m. Tuesday update, Tropical Storm Isaac's center is "outrunning" the deep convection by about a degree due to strengthening westerly shear.

The NHC is estimating that as many as 20 inches of rain could fall in some places along the southern North Carolina coast while bringing in excess of 10 inches of rain in parts of SC.

Florence is expected to make landfall about 8 a.m. Friday, then stall over the Wilmington region, dumping up to 35 inches of rain and prompting worry of "extreme" flash flooding. A NOAA hurricane hunter aircraft will soon fly through the centre of Isaac, and will provide a better assessment of the intensity of the tropical storm and the extent of its winds.

Also spinning in the Atlantic are Tropical Storms Helene and Isaac and Subtropical Storm Joyce, while Tropical Depression Olivia and Super Typhoon Mangkhut are making waves in the Pacific. While early on Wednesday the odds of it forming dropped, by afternoon forecasters had again increased the chance to 70 percent over two days.
