Trump rejects Puerto Rico storm death toll

Trump has rejected that death toll.

At the request of Puerto Rican officials, researchers at George Washington University's Milken Institute School of Public Health conducted a study in August and estimated 2,975 died after Hurricane Maria.

Hurricane strength wind gusts have knocked down trees and power lines, leaving more than half a million people in the dark.

A spokesman for former U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, who won the Florida GOP primary for governor with Trump's support, said he did not agree with Trump's tweets. It was initially said to have killed just 64 people.

He wrote: "FIFTY TIMES LAST ORIGINAL NUMBER - NO WAY!"

"3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico", Trump tweeted early Thursday.

As happens often, congressional Republicans were blindsided Thursday morning by a tweet, as President Donald Trump challenged without evidence the official conclusion that almost 3,000 people died in Puerto Rico from last year's Hurricane Maria.

As of time of writing, five deaths in North Carolina are being attributed to Hurricane Florence.

It found that 2,975 people died in Puerto Rico as a result of Hurricane Maria. But Trump, whose efforts to help the island territory recover have been persistently criticized, has repeatedly questioned that number over the last couple of days. "What's the point? Honestly, you know?"

Despite the nation-wide fear, strawberry farmers have asked consumers to still purchase strawberries but chop them up the first. Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is said to have issued the reward over concerns for growers as well as consumers.

Once a Category-4 hurricane with winds of 225kph, the hurricane was downgraded to Category 1 on Thursday night. With a storm surge warning in effect, the authorities urge people to prepare themselves for the disaster.

"The people of Puerto Rico know the American government failed them", Velasquez said. Astros shortstop Carlos Correa, also a native of Puerto Rico, skipped the visit to gather supplies for relief from Hurricane Maria.

Colbert, still doing his Trump impression, extrapolates from that "I love Puerto Rico!" closer by saying, "Yes, yes, you're my favorite bunch of lying, ungrateful fake dead people".

"Casualties don't make a person look bad", said House Speaker Paul Ryan.

President Donald Trump is notorious for making false claims and denying any set of information that makes him look bad - even if it's from his own government.

Where does the official death toll come from?

San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz slammed Donald Trump as "paranoid" and "delusional".

FEMA, the agency in charge of coordinating the federal response to Florence, was criticized previous year for its handling of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, a friend of Trump's who talks to him often, said he thinks Trump "sees every attack on him as sort of undercutting his legitimacy". "We have a moral obligation to do better, not only to finish the job in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, but to prevent the same type of inadequate response from ever happening again".
