Washoe County Reports Human Case of West Nile Virus

The state's highest year was 2003, when Iowa had 147 cases.

The virus is passed through bites from infected mosquitoes. In extreme cases West Nile infection can be fatal to people.

James Tomarken today reported one human case of West Nile virus in Suffolk County, the first human case reported this year.

Use an approved insect repellent and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

WNV was already known to be present in mosquitoes in the region. Health officials emphasize the importance of people taking precautions as suggested by the CDC to keep mosquitoes from biting. Symptoms may begin between three to 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.

Make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep mosquitoes out. They also urge you to avoid having standing water on your property, which serves as mosquito breeding grounds, and that horses are vaccinated against the virus.

West Nile can cause fever, headaches, nausea, muscle stiffness and can be deadly to people with weak immune systems and the elderly. Residents who experience symptoms are advised to visit their healthcare providers. Horses, humans and some birds are most susceptible to the virus.
