Super Typhoon Mangkhut lands on south China coast

Typhoon Mangkhut barreled into southern China on Sunday, killing two people after lashing the Philippines with strong winds and heavy rain that left at least 64 dead and dozens more feared buried in a landslide.

It's expected to pass about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of the Pearl River Delta - an area in southern China that includes the cities of Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Macau - at about noon Hong Kong time Sunday, according to the the HKO.

Parts of Hong Kong and Macau were severely flooded, though there were no immediate reports of fatalities. A red alert, the most severe warning, was issued for densely populated southern China, which the national meteorological center said would face a "severe test caused by wind and rain".

Mangkhut lashed the northern Philippines with maximum winds of 127 miles per hour and gusts of up to 177 miles per hour.

The Hong Kong Observatory had earlier warned that wind speeds of up to 118kmh were expected.

The death toll in the Philippines, where the main island of Luzon was mauled with fierce winds and rain, rose to 65 overnight as rescuers pulled more bodies from a ill-prepared landslide in the mountain town of Itogon.

But the head of the military's Northern Luzon Command, Emmanuel Salamat, told Reuters that at least 19 more were killed in landslides in one part of Benguet province. In the Philippines, where most of the deaths have occurred, a landslide caused by the storm is mainly to blame.

The Philippines, which was battered by the typhoon on Saturday, appeared to have been spared the high number of casualties many had feared.

The Philippines is routinely hit during the typhoon season but the strength of Manghukt evoked memories of the deadliest storm on national record - Super Typhoon Haiyan - which killed more than 7,000 in 2013.

A police officer said rescuers couldn't access the area on Saturday because the ground was unstable.

Itogon Mayor Victorio Palangdan told The Associated Press by phone that at the height of the typhoon's onslaught Saturday afternoon, dozens of people, mostly miners and their families, rushed into an old three-story building in the village of Ucab.
