Two shark attacks within 24 hours at Whitsundays in Australia

There hasn't been a fatal shark attack in Queensland since 2014 when 18-year-old Daniel Smith was attacked by a tiger shark near Rudder Reef near Port Douglas.

The 46-year-old mum was saved by an emergency department doctor who was in a nearby boat in the area.

It is the second serious shark attack in Queensland's Whitsunday Islands within 24 hours.

Both attacks occurred in Cid Harbour, a picturesque bay surrounded by beaches in a popular tourist area on the north coast of Queensland.

"At approximately 1343 we received a notification that a young child had been bitten by a shark in the Whitsunday Islands", she said.

"Paramedics are treating a female child in a serious condition with a significant leg injury after being bitten by a shark in waters near Cid Harbour", the Queensland Ambulance Service tweeted.
