Marine Le Pen Says She's Defying Order for Psychological Evaluation

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has attacked a "crazy" court demand for her to undergo psychiatric tests after she tweeted pictures of Islamic State brutality.

According to the document posted by Ms Le Pen, the judge wants the tests to determine if she suffers mental illness or is "capable of understanding remarks and answering questions".

The investigation is one of a series that have distracted Le Pen's National Rally, formerly known as the National Front, as it seeks to rebuild after her loss to President Emmanuel Macron in the second round of an election a year ago.

"I thought I had experienced everything: well no! For having denounced the horrors of Daesh, the court has ordered me to undergo a psychiatric evaluation", Le Pen wrote on Twitter.

Le Pen's hard-left rival Jean-Luc Melenchon said the evaluation was unnecessary because Le Pen was "politically responsible for her political acts". The charges stem from Le Pen's decision to post the images, including a photo of decapitated USA journalist James Foley, after the Paris terror attacks in November 2015.

She then said it was all part government plot to discredit her, even though there is a strict separation of powers between the executive and judiciary in France.

"It's insane", Ms Le Pen tweeted.

"Of course, I will not go to this psychiatric assessment and I will wait to see how the magistrate intends to force me", she reportedly told BFM TV.

The 2017 presidential candidate denounced the order as "mind-blowing", saying: "This regime is really starting to scare [us]".

If Le Pen is convicted in court, she faces up to three years in prison and a fine of about $87,000. "Words fail me! Solidarity with her and with the French who love freedom!"

The other images showed a tank running over a man in an orange jumpsuit, while another jumpsuit-clad man was shown in a cage being burned alive. She posted the images in response to a journalist's comparison between her far-right party and "Islamic State", which is also known as Daesh.
