Gunmen kill 11 Revolutionary Guards in attack on Iran military parade -ISNA

A number of armed assailants have opened fire at a military parade now underway in Ahvaz, southwest of Iran, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) reported.

Following a deadly attack on a military parade in southern Iran, the country's foreign minister said that regional sponsors of terrorism and their "US masters" are to be held accountable for such assaults.

ISNA published photographs of the attack's aftermath, with bloodied troops in dress uniforms helping each other walk away.

Ahvaz is the capital of Khuzestan province, an oil-rich region where Arab separatists have been known to attack oil pipelines in the past.

That attack had at that point been the only one by the Sunni extremists inside of Shiite Iran, which has been deeply involved in the wars in Iraq and Syria where the militants once held vast territory.

"Security forces have restored security in the area but the parade has totally been disrupted", a reporter on the scene for Iranian state television said by phone in a live broadcast.

The semi-official news agency Mehr said further shooting broke out as some of the attackers who managed to escape were being chased. The semi-official Tasnim news agency said at least eight member of the Guard had been killed.

Iran is also now facing intensified attacks in its Kurdish-majority provinces (Rojhilat) and along its Western border with the Kurdistan Region, where Kurdish opposition groups operate.

Last year, in the first deadly attack claimed by Islamic State in Tehran, 18 people were killed at the parliament and mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder and first supreme leader of the Islamic Republic. The assault shocked Tehran, which has seen few militant attacks in the decades after the tumult surrounding the Islamic Revolution.
