Study reveals best way to improve your child's brain power

Walsh and the team analyzed data coming from 4,520 children from 20 locations in the US the experts also tested the kids' cognitive skills, adjusting the results for puberty development, household income, and more factors that might have the ability to affect the kids' performance.

A new study says that parents should limit the recreational screentime of children to two hours a day to improve their cognition. The children also underwent a cognition test, which assessed areas such as attention, language abilities, memory and processing speed.

The American Academy of Pediatrics actually recommends no screen time before a child is 18 months old.

Those guidelines recommend that children get nine to 11 hours of uninterrupted sleep, less than two hours of screen time and at least one hour of physical activity every day.

Researchers kept in mind other factors that may have influenced the results such as the net household income, race and ethnicity, the body max index and other useful indicators, but they can not claim that the study is completely accurate. The children were also asked to fill in questionnaires and complete puzzles that measured their cognitive functions.

Earlier this year, West caused controversy when he claimed in an interview that 400 years of slavery "sounds like a choice". Outspoken rap star Kanye West has argued that America should abolish the constitutional amendment that outlaws slavery.

The more individual recommendations the child met, the better their cognition.

According to the study conducted by a team of researchers from Ontario, Canada, limiting kids' screen time likely makes them starter as it improves their brain power.

Although there is substantial evidence for the association between physical activity and cognitive development, in this study meeting the physical activity recommendation alone showed no association with cognition. But new research is giving parents around the world a good reason to really focus on creating healthier habits for their family: Having just the right amount of sleep, exercise, and limited screen time (yes, all three!) might be key to developing young people's brain power.

The study found only 1 in 20 children in the US met all three guidelines, while almost one in three met none of them. The authors note this was a surprising finding and may suggest that the measure used may not have been specific enough.

The authors note some limitations, including that their study is observational so can not establish the underlying causes or the direction of the association. "The link between sedentary behaviours, like recreational screen time, is unclear as this research is in the early stages and it appears to vary depending on the types of screen-based activity". The real battle comes with figuring out how to actually implement these recommended behaviors in your child's day-to-day life. Each minute spent on screens necessarily displaces a minute from sleep or cognitively challenging activities.
