JBS Tolleson, Inc., a Tolleson, Arizona, establishment, has recalled approximately 6,912,875 pounds of various raw, non-intact beef products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Newport, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The recalled beef is marked with "EST.267" on the packaging. The agency posted a 33-page list of the recalled items, which were shipped to retail locations and institutions across the country. Still, it wasn't until September that the Food Safety and Inspection Service was made aware of another possible salmonella outbreak.

Restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell recalled beef products and should check food storage and freezers for them.

"FSIS advises all consumers to safely prepare their raw meat products, including fresh and frozen", and to consume ground beef only if it has been cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit, the FSIS said in a statement. Return it to the store or throw it away in a secure garbage can.

An epidemiological investigation found 57 people in 16 states, including 15 in Arizona, 12 in Colorado and six in Utah, have become ill so far. The Centers for Disease Control says no deaths have been reported. Since the JBS Tolleson recall was caused by salmonella, it may cause more fear for consumers buying any sort of meat.

Attorney Fred Pritzker, who has represented clients sickened with Salmonella infections, said, "Even when you recover from this infection, there is a risk you will develop a serious health complication in the future".

Salmonella is one of the most common foodborne illnesses in the USA, but the pathogen is more often associated with poultry, eggs or produce than beef. Thirty-one percent of patients have been hospitalized.

The symptoms of a Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting.

In interviews, 92% of the 39 people investigators questioned said they ate ground beef at home before they got sick.

Health officials identified JBS as the common supplier of the raw ground beef and found it to be a "probable source" of the illnesses.
