Microsoft Reveals Project xCloud for Games, Public Trials to Begin in 2019

Microsoft has energized the gaming world today with its announcement of Project xCloud, a new service "where you are empowered to play the games you want, with the people you want, whenever you want, wherever you are, and on any device of your choosing". And while other details aren't yet available, the initial focus will be on delivering a "quality experience for all gamers on all devices that's consistent with the speed and high-fidelity gamers experience and expect on their PCs and consoles".

However, there are internal tests for Project xCloud going on right now. The "custom blade" hosts parts of multiple Xbox One consoles that then run through Microsoft's Azure cloud system to bring the games to you.

As Phil Spencer previously said during E3, Project xCloud will also work on mobile devices including phones and tablets, and Kareem Choundry revealed today that an Xbox wireless controller won't be mandatory on those devices. Xbox and Project xCloud merely share a letter. An example given was Xbox games running on a tablet or smartphone, where players would have the choice to either connect an Xbox One controller to the device via Bluetooth, or use touch screen controls, in order to play through their games. The immersive nature of console and PC games often requires controls that are mapped to multiple keys, buttons, sticks and triggers. Tests are now being run with recent and upcoming games at Microsoft, and data centers have been supplied with a "new customizable blade that can host the component parts of multiple Xbox One consoles". "With datacenters in 54 Azure regions and services available in 140 countries, Azure has the scale to deliver a great gaming experience for players worldwide, regardless of their location", say Microsoft.
