Viktoria Marinova killed: Bulgarian journalist's rape and murder was 'a warning'

The European commission has urged Bulgarian authorities to bring to justice those responsible for the brutal killing of the journalist Viktoria Marinova, who had been reporting on alleged corruption in one of the EU's newest member states.

That appearance was her first time anchoring the show on Ruse-based TV station TVN - a popular channel in northeastern Bulgaria.

Cops confirmed her mobile phone, glasses, vehicle keys and some clothes of her clothes were missing. The two reporters she spoke to were briefly detained after the show aired. The head of the Ruse prosecution office, Georgi Georgiev, and the vice-director of the local police, Ilian Enchev, told a press conference on Sunday that "all versions" about the murder were on the table.

"Bulgarian authorities must employ all efforts and resources to carry out an exhaustive inquiry and bring to justice those responsible", said Tom Gibson, the CPJ's European Union representative, in a statement.

Journalist groups and officials in other countries have called for a full and independent investigation into her death after Marinova became the latest journalist to be killed in the European Union.

"We are working on all possible motives and we do not exclude any", Marinov told reporters on Monday in Ruse, Bulgaria's main river port. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) also released a report earlier this year, detailing the obstacles to investigative journalism in Bulgaria with the Bulgarian parliament supporting a controversial legal amendment that would force media outlets to reveal the sources of their income adding pressure on media that rely on foreign donations to maintain their editorial independence.

"Viktoria's death, the brutal manner in which she was killed, is an execution", Yordanov said.

The journalist, who now fears for his own safety, described Ms Mainova as "extremely disciplined, ambitious" and said she was a "a person with an extreme sense of justice". "It was meant to serve as an example, something like a warning".

A journalist is killed on average every week around the world, according to figures compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

TVN said: "With great pain and insurmountable grief the TVN's team is experiencing the loss of our beloved colleague Victoria Marinova and we pray for sympathy to the sorrow of her relatives and colleagues".

Hundreds of journalists protested against government threats against the nations biggest broadcasters - with deputy prime minister Valeri Simonov accusing them of leading a "smear campaign".

But media focused on her recent work.

People who worked with Marinova said otherwise.

Vigils for Marinova, mother of a seven-year-old daughter, were planned in Ruse and the northern cities of Vidin and Pleven, as well as the capital Sofia.
