Here's how Hurricane Michael could impact Maryland

Right now, the National Hurricane Center's forecast path shows Hurricane Michael is likely to make landfall along the northeast Gulf Coast between Pensacola and Destin, Florida on Wednesday as a Category 3 hurricane.

An Inland Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Appling, Atkinson, Bacon, Clinch, Coffee, Columbia, Echols, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Jeff Davis, Suwannee, Ware, Ben Hill, Berrien, Clay, Coffee, Cook, Irwin, Lanier, Lee, Lowndes, Quitman, Randolph, Terrell, Tift, and Turner counties in Georgia.

Hurricane Michael will also bring 4 to 8 inches of rain in some places along the Florida Panhandle and the Carolinas, with an isolated 12 inches of rain, the agency forecasted.

The latest wind speed probabilities show over a 50 percent chance of winds of 40 miles per hour or greater for most of our area. (The 11am ET forecast on Monday from the National Hurricane Center calls for 120mph winds for Michael at landfall).

In addition to parts of western and northern Florida, a hurricane watch is also in effect for Mobile, Alabama and surrounding areas. "Tropical storm conditions are possible within the tropical storm watch area by Tuesday night or early Wednesday", the NHC added.

An Air Force hurricane hunter airplane was sent into the storm to investigate, the hurricane center said. Tampa is comfortably sitting in the yellow band, meaning that there could be sustained winds of 30 to 40 miles per hour in the area.

Scott activated 500 National Guard troops in advance of the storm.

As Hurricane Michael plows up the Gulf of Mexico to smack the Florida Panhandle, forecasters expect South Florida to get sideswiped by some extra wind and rain atop the usual for this time of year.

Hurricane Michael is gathering strength and heading toward the panhandle region of Florida, which prompted officials at Hurlburt Field to announce Monday the base will evacuate its aircraft.

Michael already has disrupted the hectic campaign season, as Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee, suspended campaign events to prepare the city for the hurricane.

Florida State University said its campuses in Tallahassee and Panama City will be closed from Tuesday to Friday. "Take this seriously and keep your family safe", Scott urged his constituents while speaking from Bay County. Regardless, significant storm surge and damaging winds will be expected along the Gulf Coast.

Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued over the northeastern portion of Mexico's Yucatan Penninsula and the western portions of Cuba ahead of the storm.

The center of Michael is expected to move across the Yucatán Channel - a strait between Mexico and Cuba - Monday, slowly making its way across the eastern Gulf of Mexico through Wednesday.
