Hubble in safe mode after gyro failure

The telescope is now operating on two of these enhanced gyros. With the shuttle now retired, NASA has no present capability to send humans to fix the telescope.

Hubble has carried a total of six gyroscopes - three standard and three enhanced - since astronauts installed them during a spacewalk in 2009, typically using three at once. Scientists are acutely aware of that today after placing the orbiting observatory into safe mode following the failure of another gyroscope.

"Mission experts are taking steps to return Hubble to great science", the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said in a tweet.

But when the telescope's operators switched the instrument to running on all three enhanced gyroscopes, one wasn't working quite as well as it should have been.

The Hubble Space Telescope is now operating in safe mode, with all science operations suspended, after one of the three gyroscopes used to aim the telescope failed on Friday 5 October.

NASA said staff at the Goddard Space Flight Center and the Space Telescope Science Institute were conducting tests and analysis to get the gyro working again.

Till then science operations with Hubble have been suspended.

"There isn't much difference between 2- [gyros] and 1, and it buys lots of extra observing time", tweeted Rachel Osten, the deputy mission head for Hubble at the Space Telescope Science Institute, late October 7.

But, while Osten shared on Twitter that it has been a "very stressful weekend", she also assured the general public that "we knew it was coming", and that this gyro actually lasted longer than the team had initially planned for.

'There isn't much difference between 2- and 1, and it buys lots of extra observing time. The newly failed gyro is the last of that old design, and it lasted about six months longer than expected.

One of the telescope's most famous images is a portion of the Eagle Nebula, known as the "Pillars of Creation", which shows three columns of cold gas illuminated by light from a cluster of young stars. Its successor, the 6.5-metre James Webb Space Telescope, will not launch until 2021 at the earliest.
