Limo in deadly NY crash recently failed inspection, governor says

In 2009, a Colgan Air Flight crash killed 50 people in Buffalo, New York.

They were among 17 young adults who climbed into the limo to celebrate their friend's 30th birthday at an upstate NY brewery, the paper and other media reported. The limo went across the road and hit an unoccupied SUV parked at the Apple Barrel, a local institution and popular stop for autumn leaf-peepers.

The speed limit at the intersection is 50 miles per hour, Fiore said.

Twenty dead after a stretch limo en route to a birthday party crashed in upstate New York; Bryan Llenas reports on what investigators are saying about the tragedy. He's a Democrat from Amsterdam.

Some relatives shed tears as a woman sang "Amazing Grace".

The ceremony ended with participants lifting candles above their heads to signal unity and perseverance. The limo driver, all 17 passengers, and the two pedestrians died.

The four sisters' aunt, Barbara Douglas, said they had felt "they did the responsible thing getting a limo so they wouldn't have to drive anywhere".

"My heart is completely sunken", Karina said. But before Amanda Halse received her sister's reply, she died in the crash.

A similar safety issue arose in the 2014 crash that injured comic Tracy Morgan and killed his friend, comedian James McNair: The luxury limo van had been modified to block exit doors, which made it hard to reach the victims.

Prestige Limousine expressed condolences to relatives of Saturday's crash in Schoharie (skoh-HAYR'-ee).

Authorities said the limousine company, Prestige Limousine, was cooperating in the investigation. Autopsies were being performed, including on the driver, to see if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

The New York intersection where a limousine crashed, killing 18 people headed to a birthday party, is notoriously known as a risky intersection that officials have attempted to fix without success, a nearby store owner and officials said. "Prestige has a lot of questions to answer".

Planet only has until 2030 to stem catastrophic climate change
The likelihood of an Arctic Ocean free of sea ice in summer would be once per century, instead of at least once per decade. He fears that the IPCC report undersells the difficulty of achieving the 1.5 °C goal.

Governor: Limo that crashed, killing 20, shouldn't have been on the road
It crashed into an unoccupied parked auto and hit two pedestrians before coming to a rest in a shallow ravine, officials said. He said a federal government and state police investigation are ongoing, and the cause of the accident remains unclear.

The governor added that the driver did not have the specific license required to operate the limousine.

"It's tragic. terrible. I can't even begin to even explain", Abeling said in an interview Sunday from Upstate New York, where her family was gathered.

Federal records show the company had undergone five inspections and had four vehicles pulled from service in the past two years.

Several years later, Hussain posed as a radical militant, helping the government convict four men of plotting to blow up two synagogues and shoot down military planes at an airport in Newburgh, New York.

His role at the Federal Bureau of Investigation was assailed by civil liberties groups, who accused him of helping the Federal Bureau of Investigation entrap people.

A limousine loaded with revellers headed to a 30th birthday party in the United States flew through a stop sign at the end of a highway and smashed into an SUV outside a store, killing 20.

Sumwalt said the NTSB is interested in the mechanical condition of the vehicle, including its brakes, tires and suspension systems.

Sumwalt said it was the most deadly USA transportation accident since the Colgan Air Flight 3407 plane crash on February 12, 2009, near Buffalo that killed 50 people.

Factory-built limousines must meet stringent safety regulations.

Sumwalt added that most of the victims were found inside the vehicle following the crash and one or two victims may have been ejected.

Few federal regulations govern limos modified after leaving the factory.

Another complicating factor is that US transportation regulation is a patchwork between federal and state agencies - regulations can vary greatly between states. "While families will step in and provide loving care for these girls, there will be expenses that we can help with during this time when we otherwise feel so helpless", wrote Maltzman on the campaign page.
