Second suspect in poisoning of ex-Russian spy named

Bellingcat claims Alexander Miskin, a military doctor working for Russian intelligence, travelled to Salisbury in southern England to target Sergei Skripal, the BBC reports.

The man, who used the alias Alexander Petrov to travel to the United Kingdom, was unmasked as a trained military doctor employed by the GRU - Russia's military intelligence agency.

The British open-source website said it had identified the suspect using testimonies from people the suspect knew and a scanned copy of his passport.

In late September, Bellingcat reported that "Boshirov" is actually Col. Anatoliy Chepiga, a highly decorated officer with the GRU, Russia's intelligence service.

Bellingcat published a scanned copy of his passport and claimed Mishkin was born in July 1979 in the village of Loyga, Arkhangelsk district of northern Russian Federation.

"In the period 2011-2018, Alexander Mishkin travelled extensively under his new identity".

Mishkin trained as a military doctor before joining the GRU, moving to Moscow in 2010, and being assigned the undercover identity of Alexander Petrov, Bellingcat says, citing both public documents and unnamed sources. British authorities said the former spy and his daughter, Yulia, were sickened by a Soviet-made nerve agent.

Sergei Skripal - who sold secrets to MI6 - and his daughter Yulia survived being poisoned with Novichok on 4 March.

The poisoning of Skripal, a former Russian agent who was convicted of spying for Britain, became a major global incident.

Until September 2014, Dr Mishkin's registered home address was Khoroshevskoe Shosse 76B - the Moscow headquarters of GRU.

This is how British authorities discovered the two Russian agents allegedly behind the novichok attack.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said the attack was likely ordered at the highest levels of the Russian government, an allegation vehemently rejected by Russian President Vladimir Putin. He studied and graduated from one of Russia's elite Military Medical Academies, and was trained as a military doctor for the Russian naval armed forces.

But investigative journalism site Bellingcat has dug into the backgrounds of "Petrov" and "Boshirov", and says it has identified both men's true identities and that they work for the GRU.

"He is just a scumbag", Putin said of Skripal.
