Sevastova beats Osaka in China Open semifinal

Sevastova beats Osaka in China Open semifinal

But it was ultimately Sevastova's inconsistency of 35 errors, 22 of which came in the crucial second set, that cost her the chance to win what would have been the biggest title of her career. After Novak Djokovich, Andey Murray and Rafael Nadal, Nikoloz Basilashvili is now the champion of the China Open.

The win cements an impressive year for the Danish star which saw her win her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, returning her to the world number one position exactly six years after last holding the top spot.

Wozniacki told the WTA official website: "I didn't feel great going into the tournament, to be honest".

Wozniacki managed two breaks in the Latvian's first three services, storming to a solid 6-3, 4-1 lead that seemed unassailable given the ease with which the Dane was commanding the court in the first set.

After a bit of a struggle, Wozniacki got the break she needed to seal the victory in 55 minutes.

A break midway through the opening stanza was enough for Wozniacki to take a set lead.

"As a little kid I had a dream of becoming a professional tennis player, becoming number one in the world".

The 28-year-old Wozniacki heads into the WTA Year-End event in Singapore as the defending champion. "Caroline played incredible today, it's always tough playing against her and I have never won".
