Taylor Swift statement inspires voter registration surge

But on Sunday, Swift told her 112 million Instagram followers that she was backing and would vote for two Democrats running in Tennessee in the USA congressional midterm elections on November 6.

Kamari Guthrie, the director of communications for Vote.org, told BuzzFeed News that the organization was "up to 65,000 registrations in a single 24-hour period" since Swift's post.

Swift went on to encourage her 112 million followers to register to vote, noting that October 9 is the last day to register in her home state of Tennessee. By comparison, the site registered 56,669 new voters registered the entire month of August and 190,178 in September.

In the post, Swift endorsed a pair of Democrats: former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen to fill the Senate seat and incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper in his race in the state's 5th Congressional District.

Swift got political for the very first time on Sunday (Oct. 7), sharing her support for two Tennessee democrats in the races for Senate and House of Representatives.

In the post, she states that though she previously voted for women in office, she does not feel able to support the Republican Senate candidate, Marsha Blackburn.

In Tennessee specifically, close to half of October's new registrations took place in the 36 hours after Swift's post went up.

Swift, who has largely eschewed politics even as she has become one of pop music's biggest global superstars, told her followers she could not support Blackburn due to the congresswoman's record on women's issues and gay rights.

Swift, 28, noted Blackburn's voted against equal pay for women, against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act that protects women from domestic abuse, and opposes marriage equality.

It seems some of them rushed to do just that, according to Vote.org, a nonpartisan group that seeks to increase voter turnout. "So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count".

President Donald Trump, who has hailed Blackburn as an "outstanding person & great supporter of mine", brushed off Swifts Instagram post Monday night. "And let's say that I like her music 25 per cent less now, okay?" [Taylor Swift] doesn't like your little games and she wants Tennesseans to know that you've been in the swamp long enough.
