Turkey believes missing Saudi journalist was murdered at Saudi consulate in Istanbul

It was not clear when the search would take place. Khashoggi, a 59-year-old veteran journalist who has lived in self-imposed exile in the US since Prince Mohammed's rise to power, disappeared October 2 while on a visit to the consulate to get paperwork done to be married to his Turkish fiancée.

The Washington Post has published an image it described as the last surveillance photograph of its missing Saudi contributor. That team was sent "specifically for the murder", a person with knowledge of the Turkish investigation tells the Post.

Turkey on Monday said it expects "full cooperation" from Saudi authorities to locate the missing journalist.

While Riyadh claimed he had left the consulate after his visit, Turkish police said Khashoggi did not emerge from the building. "Don't you have cameras and other things?"

"He entered the general consulate himself, and if he has entered by himself and if he did not exit it, of course this should be proven by the general consulate", Erdogan said at a news conference in Budapest. "They have all of them". Why don't you prove it?

"The consulate officials can not save themselves by simply saying 'he has left, '" the Turkish president added.

"See when I hear arrest of a friend who did nothing that is worth to be arrested, make me feel I shouldn't go. Hopefully that will sort itself out".

"There's some pretty bad stories about it. I do not like it", Trump said.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he does not know anything about Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance. Saudi Arabia is ranked 169th out of 180 in the press freedom group Reporters Without Borders' latest World Press Freedom Index.

Khashoggi, a former Saudi government adviser, had been living in self-imposed exile in the United States since previous year fearing possible arrest.

"When President Trump became president, we've changed our armament strategy again for the next 10 years to put more than 60% with the United States of America", he added. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman "is acting like [Russian President Vladimir] Putin", Khashoggi wrote in another one.

Saudi Arabia denies the suggestion.

"What we do care about is Jamal's well-being and revealing the truth about what occurred", the ambassador said. "And despite our differences, and his choice to go into his so called 'self-exile, ' we still maintained regular contact when he was in Washington". "We are his family and we inquire about the circumstances of his disappearance and the search for him", he said. "Jamal is a Saudi citizen whose safety and security is a top priority", he said.

According to two sources quoted by The Washington Post, for which Khashoggi worked, the journalist died earlier this week at the hands of a Saudi assassination squad.

Saudi Arabia insists the allegations it faces over Khashoggi's disappearance are 'baseless, ' but has not offered any evidence over the last week to support their claim he simply walked away and vanished into Istanbul though his fiancée waited just outside.
