Bowyer's wreck becomes Almirola's mess -- again — NASCAR notebook

Chase Elliott pulled away in overtime and earned an automatic berth into the next round of NASCAR playoffs with a win Sunday at Dover International Speedway.

The top eight drivers after the next two races move on to the next round and Almirola, Bowyer, Kyle Larson and Alex Bowman are the bottom four after the first playoff race in the round of 12.

"We don't anticipate a huge movement from a revenue standpoint for the gaming company", McGlynn said.

More importantly, the victory earned Elliot a spot in the next round of the NASCAR playoffs.

Elliott inherited the lead late in the race after a wreck took out some of the frontrunners with five laps to go.

"I've had an up and down year I feel like", Elliott said, "and to have this race slip away (last year when he was passed for the lead late by Kyle Busch) makes today that much more sweet".

He left that race 0 for 70 in Cup.

Elliott rubbed his head and leaned against his vehicle, crestfallen as he replayed the final laps in his mind.

But it was one big celebration on Sunday.

After last week's close call at the Charlotte Motor Speedway road course, Jimmie Johnson was a logical choice to contend for a victory at Dover International Speedway, where he has accumulated 11 of his 83 career victories.

RACE DISTANCE 400 miles, 400 laps.

"I think this only elevates his game", Gordon said.

Harvick has 14 stage wins this season and is storming toward a Dover sweep in the No. 4 Ford.

"I don't really care about points, I want to win", he said.

Rank - Driver - Car, Team, Manufacturer - [Last Rank (Trend)]1st - Kevin Harvick - #4, Stewart-Haas Racing, Ford - [1st (0)] 2nd - Kyle Busch - #18, Joe Gibbs Racing, Toyota - [2nd (0)] 3rd - Chase Elliott - #9, Hendrick Motorsports, Chevrolet - [8th (+5)] 4th - Joey Logano - #22, Team Penske, Ford - [9th (+5)] 5th - Martin Truex Jr.

Rain washed out qualifying and the field was set by points, putting the 12 playoff drivers at the top of the field.

SHR was in control with Kevin Harvick early and Almirola late.

The win is the second of Elliott's career and his first on Dover's Monster Mile. That triggered a multi-car wreck that collected championship contenders and brought out the red flag to force overtime. "We were lucky there avoiding that crash but maybe that makes up for losing the race with an absolutely dominant auto". The only laps Elliott led were the last 11. "The way the rulebook looks today, I think the teams and the drivers understand what it looks like, and I think we'll clarify for '19 with more specific language in it".

They got the points, the win - and a championship hope still alive and well.

"He's been so close here", Hendrick said.

Johnson's bid for a record eighth NASCAR Cup title ended last week when he was eliminated from the playoffs.

A series of quick repairs allowed Johnson to return to the track, but the 11-time Dover victor rejoined the race 10 laps down before finishing 36th. Busch and Harvick each had 3-1 odds to win the race.

Dover International Speedway opened its on-site betting kiosk this weekend and became the only track that allowed sports gambling on its property.
