EU, Britain narrowing differences on Irish border in Brexit talks

Barnier is attempting to negotiate such a deal, but time is running out and European Union leaders have made it clear that they expect Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May to come up with a way to unblock talks before next week.

Mr Baker told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that he was expecting Tory Whips to go to work on the rebels - but that around 40 of them would stand firm against her.

The Budget is due on October 29, after the next European Union summit and before any special Brexit summit that is expected to finalise the deal.

But he also set out key objections to her proposed new trading relationship which involves a UK-EU customs partnership and a "common rulebook" for goods travelling across the border.

Foster is using her position as powerbroker in a bid to prevent any arrangement that would see checks on goods travelling between Britain and Northern Ireland, which she views as a threat to the constitutional integrity of the United Kingdom and the Northern Irish economy.

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt suggested Mrs May might have to amend her Chequers plan to get a final deal, saying that "we don't know where this is going to end up".

European Union Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said on Wednesday an agreement with Britain could be "within reach" next week, calling for decisive progress in the talks in time for a summit of all 28 EU leaders.

Rejection of any kind of special status for Northern Ireland inside the EU customs union by the DUP, which props up Mrs May's government, makes getting a deal through parliament much more challenging.

A DUP source told Sky News: "It is unacceptable that we would be treated differently to the rest of the UK".

Barnier told small business leaders that the talks were "continuing intensively this week, day and night, with the aim. of having a deal within reach, if we follow through to the end of this negotiations, on October 17".

A Brexit sign is seen between Donegal in the Republic of Ireland and Londonderry in Northern Ireland at the border village of Muff, Ireland, February 1, 2018. Asked whether that implied her supporters are ready to "fight and die" for them, she replied: "What I meant by that is that they are deep red - they're not pink".

The Labour leader is expected to whip his MPs to vote against the Brexit deal when it comes to Commons, whatever the shape of the agreement as it is unlikely to meet with the party's "six tests".

Foster stressed that she wants to reach a Brexit deal and she is staying in Brussels for the next two days in order to try and find a solution that would be acceptable to her.

Barnier said he realised such checks were politically hard but this was the effect of Britons voting to leave the EU.
