PSN ID Change Feature Announced, In PlayStation Preview Program Now

Now, you won't be able to change your name quite yet, but rest assured that it's coming.

Last week we heard from multiple developers that Sony was about to unveil its PSN name-changing service: something Microsoft rolled out many years ago that Sony fans have clamored for.

The PlayStation Network online ID change feature beta will be part of the PlayStation Preview Program and become available to select users who have pre-registered as testers for previous PlayStation 4 system software betas. For those that do get access, you'll be able to do your first change for free. Subsequent changes will cost £7.99/$9.99, or £3.99/$4.99 if you have PlayStation Plus.

How Google+ put thousands of users at risk
This method will better secure third party APIs with Google services, allowing for less data to be given to outside applications. That said, Google had confirmed that the data hasn't been misused.

You will have the option to display your old ID alongside your new ID, which is interesting as it suggests that PlayStation really are putting some kind of universal identifier behind the scenes to keep your various names linked.

Additionally, when you change your name, "you will have the option to display your previous ID with your new ID, so your friends can recognize you". "For PlayStation Plus members, it will cost $4.99". However, some PS4, PS3, and PS Vita games will not be compatible, which could cause problems. The preview is set to end around November 2018, while full implementation is set for 2019. If that happens, you can revert back to your original ID for free at any time (this can only be done once during the preview program). At that time, a full list of compatible games (those published before April 1, 2018) will be released.
