On Tuesday, police in Ruse arrested a Romanian citizen in connection with the murder, but later released him without charge due to a lack of concrete evidence.

Late on October 8, the Interior Ministry announced that prosecutors had opened an investigation into the GP Group and froze 14 million euros ($16 million) of its assets, as hundreds of people thronged candlelight vigils in Sofia and Marinova's hometown of Ruse.

"Shocked by the horrendous murder of Victoria Marinova".

Marinova was a director of TVN, a small TV station in Ruse, and a TV presenter for two investigative programs.

According to news reports, it is not yet clear whether her death was directly related to her journalistic work, but national authorities are reportedly carrying out a murder investigation.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters in NY that there has been "a very worrying increase of violence, sexual and otherwise, that's particularly targeting women journalists".

"Viktoria's death, the brutal manner in which she was killed, is an execution", Yordanov said. Harlem Desir, the media freedom representative for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, demanded a "full and thorough investigation" of Marinova's slaying.

Marinova is at least the third journalist to have suffered a violent death in the European Union alone over the past 12 months, after Jan Kuciak in Slovakia in February and Daphne Caruana Galizia in Malta in October previous year.
