'Worst on record': Hurricane Michael slams Florida with winds up to 250kmh

"Hurricane Michael is the worst storm that the Florida Panhandle has ever seen, and one of the worst power storms to ever make landfall in the United States", Scott said at the press conference. "The historical record, going back to 1851, finds no Category 4 hurricane ever hitting the Florida panhandle".

Emergency Management Agency director Travis Brooks told WGXA-TV that a child in Seminole County, Ga., died as a result of the storm.

The Gadsden County Sheriff's office said that a man was found dead in his home in a small town outside of Tallahassee after a tree crashed through the roof. Some 125,000 homes were left without power in Georgia and over 52,000 homes in Alabama as of Wednesday evening.

Human-caused greenhouse gases in the atmosphere create an energy imbalance, with more than 90% of remaining heat trapped by the gases going into the oceans, according to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association.

As the Category 4 storm's center crossed nearby, Mulligan said, the concrete building shook and vibrated against sustained winds around 155 miles per hour.

Hurricane Michael earlier made landfall just northwest of Mexico Beach, Florida.

Based on its internal barometric pressure, Michael was the third most powerful hurricane to hit the US mainland, behind the unnamed Labor Day storm of 1935 and Camille in 1969.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency on Tuesday for 92 counties in his state, and a state of emergency also was announced in North Carolina. A pine tree punched a hole in their roof and he said the roar of the storm sounded like a jet engine as the winds accelerated.

Michael has been downgraded to a tropical storm as it continues slamming Georgia with heavy rain and risky winds.

FEMA head Brock Long acknowledged that early evacuation efforts in the area were slow in comparison to how quickly the hurricane intensified. "We have trees being uprooted, heavy, heavy rain".

Storm flooding is still occurring along the Gulf Coast.

Michael made landfall around 1 p.m. Wednesday as a Category 4 storm with catastrophic winds of 155 miles per hour.

Central pressure is the measure of how much the atmosphere in the middle of a storm weighs. Flash flooding is also expected to be a major concern as the storm continues to push inland.

The storm, which had caught many by surprise with its rapid intensification as it churned north over the Gulf of Mexico, made landfall north-west of the town of Mexico Beach at about 1:40 pm (local time) as a category four hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.

The Weather Channel warns of "catastrophic storm surge" and incredibly high speed winds associated with the storm.
