Quake near Bali, Indonesia, kills at least 3

The magnitude 6.0 quake occurred at a depth of 9 km, and a tsunami warning has not been issued.

The 6.0-magnitude quake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Bali and Java islands in the early hours, jolting residents awake and sending them rushing into the streets.

"I felt it for about 10 seconds. At first I didn't want to go out but then I made a decision to leave", Katharina Sudiyono, an Indonesian attendee at the summit, told AFP.

Bali is hosting the inaugural Asean Leaders' Gathering today, which Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is due to attend.

"We send our condolences to those affected by the quake".

The quake was felt in Bali and tourists - many Australian - had to be evacuated from the Gilli Islands off the coast.

Some guests at a hotel in Nusa Dua, south of Bali's main global airport, briefly fled outside after the strong tremor shook the building.

The disaster agency, in a notice posted on Twitter, set the rules out for foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs), saying they were not allowed to "go directly to the field" and could only work with "local partners". "We are also still gathering data from our team in East Java'".

The quake already killed three people in Java, but no deaths have yet been reported in Bali.

"Everybody panicked and the entire village ran outside".

At Balaroa, 29-year-old Muhammad Rasidi was coming to terms with the fact his three missing siblings would never be found.

"We stayed outside until dawn", he said.

Sulawesi is one of Indonesia's five main islands.

Some residents briefly left their homes in the island's capital Denpasar, according to Reuters.

Indonesia's disaster agency said "the quake was felt quite strongly by people in Sumenep and Situbondo for 2-5 seconds".

In 2004, a quake off the north Indonesia island of Sumatra triggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean that killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia. Around 5,000 people were thought to still be missing. The search for the dead is expected to end Thursday.

A few foreign aid workers have been in the disaster zone, including a team from the group Pompiers Humanitaires Francais that searched for survivors, but they have spoken of difficulties in getting entry permits and authorization.

The search for those killed in Indonesia's quake-tsunami disaster was called off on (Oct 11) Thursday, despite there being around 5,000 people still missing.
