Xbox One October update adds new Avatars, Alexa controls, Dolby Vision HDR

Avatars will appear across your Xbox One. You'll also find Avatars on activity feed posts, Friend blocks on the Home screen, Gamerscore leaderboards, club headers, profile comparisons, and more. Once enabled, you will be able to use your voice to turn on/off your console, adjust volume, launch games and apps, take screenshots, and much more. Microsoft is also launching a new Xbox Avatar Store where you will be able to buy Avatar items and accessories for your favourite games like Halo, Gears of War, etc. Of course, there is still the option to keep your original avatar if you've grown fond of it.

Now that the Xbox One October 2018 update is rolling out, the Xbox team can presumably focus on the next system update for the Xbox One codenamed "19H1" (just like for Windows 10). It's now only available in the USA, but downloading either persona's Skill Store will get you started and let you use an Amazon Echo to turn on or launch a particular game. Look for the Xbox Skill in the Alexa Skill Store or the Cortana Skill Store to get started. To set up Alexa, say, "Alexa, open Xbox". It was vitally important to Microsoft that everyone would be represented in digital form, which is why you can change virtually anything about your avatar, from skin color to clothing to hair style to mood. As part of the new promotion, anyone who purchases an Xbox One S or Xbox One X via Amazon will receive an Amazon Echo Dot as part of a limited time offer.

Dolby Vision support is now included for video streaming on supported LG TVs, with Dolby's standard going further than regular HDR10 content in colour accuracy and HDR depth. Support on more apps will come in the following months.

The update is now rolling out to Xbox One owners worldwide and includes a number of new features, such as new Xbox Avatars, and support for five new languages within the Narrator tool. "We're also adding an Australian version of English language for Narrator, so Australian users will no longer have to select USA or U.K. English to use Narrator", the Xbox team explained today.
