Earthquake Kills Three In Indonesia; Tsunami Warning In Papua New Guinea

A major 7.0-magnitude natural disaster struck Papua New Guinea's New Britain island on Thursday (Oct 11), briefly triggering a tsunami alert before authorities gave the all clear.

The center later reported that waves that are less than 30 centimeters in height are expected to hit the coastlines of Papua New Guinea and its neighboring region of Solomon Islands.

As a result of the massive quake, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued warnings about the possibility of a tsunami as an aftermath.

But scientists don't have any tide gauges close to the where the quake happened, so are unable to say at this point whether tsunamis have been generated.

The quake located in the Bali Sea shook buildings for several seconds on Bali and some residents briefly left their homes in the island's capital Denpasar, a Reuters witness said.

A strong aftershock followed a major magnitude 7.0 quake that struck off the southeastern coast of Papua New Guinea.
