NI facing blackouts if there's no-deal Brexit, warns UK Government

In the absence of a comprehensive EU-UK trade partnership after Brexit, the EU is seeking a "backstop" arrangement whereby Northern Ireland would effectively remain subject to the bloc's regulations to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

The EU has consistently blocked British attempts to agree on a finish date for the "backstop" that will keep the whole United Kingdom in a customs union, and now many Conservative Brexiteers are arguing a potentially unlimited time frame is unacceptable, the BBC reports.

"It would have to be finite, it would have to be short and it would have to be, I think, time-limited in order for it to be supported here", said Britain's Brexit minister, Dominic Raab.

However, the Brexit spokesman of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), May's parliamentary partner, said the DUP's 10 members of parliament would vote against the United Kingdom budget and consider voting no-confidence in May if the British government breaks the DUP's red lines in Brexit talks.

Mrs May set out in June proposals for a "temporary customs arrangement" to ensure that the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic remains open in the case that no broader EU/UK trade agreement has been finalised.

"But that shouldn't hide the fact that we still have some big differences left to resolve", Hammond said.

Some of May's ministers have urged her to put a time limit on that plan.

These include the future relationship between Britain and the single market, including the Irish border, Rutte said.

Several eurosceptic ministers are now reportedly considering resigning over plans to give ground on the so-called backstop arrangement.

Juncker said that the EU Commission and member states were preparing for a potential "no deal" scenario that would see Britain crash out of the EU next March without legal agreements governing its relations with the rest of the bloc.

Brexit supporters accept there is likely to be some short-term economic pain but say the government is trying to scare voters about the impact of a no-deal exit.

Ahead of a crucial summit of European Union leaders next week, May "briefed her inner cabinet. that a historic Brexit deal is close", the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

"Northern Ireland is as much a part of my country as Somerset is - and the two parts of the country must be treated equally and fairly and to cast Northern Ireland off into a colony of the European Union would be entirely improper".

"We are working not just with the domestic preparations that we need to do, but with the Belgians, the Dutch and the French, to make sure not just passengers going, as you say, on holiday but also goods can continue to flow".
