WHO tasks African leaders on mental health care

Ghana will mark World Mental Health Day today with a public lecture on mental health at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Hall at Osu in Accra.

An initiative of the World Federation of Mental Health and supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO), World Mental Health Day takes place every year on 10 October with the objective of raising awareness of mental health issues and promoting greater emotional wellbeing.

In recognition of World Mental Health Day, leader of the Liberal Democrats and former business secretary Vince Cable has called on employers to publish their mental health strategies and for the extension of mental health services to 18-25-year olds.

They are likely to debate the findings of a new report from WHO, which states that mental health should be explicitly included in global policy as mental health problems kill more young people than any other cause worldwide.

It's estimated that one in six people in the United Kingdom will experience a mental health issue over the past week, with up to 10% of people in England experiencing depression in their lifetime.

"But we want to help people deal with it better".

New mental health support teams will work with schools to ensure young people get the help they need. "With one in six British workers experiencing mental illness it's time for businesses to make a change and start creating more mentally healthy workplaces".
