Buyer of Banksy painting that self-destructed wants sale to go through

The work has been given a new title, Love Is In The Bin, and has been granted a certificate by Banksy's authentication body.

Just after the painting was sold on October 5 for $1.37 million, an alarm sounded and then the canvas began sliding through the bottom of the frame, emerging in shreds as those in attendance watched in disbelief.

In the statement, Banksy's former gallerist Steve Lazarides shut down any further speculation that the stunt was done in collaboration with the auction house.

Over the weekend, onlookers at a Sotheby's art auction were left stunned when a Banksy "Girl with Balloon" painting sold for $1.4 million, and then promptly self destructed thanks to a shredding device hidden within the frame.

Banksy later posted a video of the moment of the painting's destruction to Instagram captioned, "Going, going gone ..."

Thierry Ehrmann, who heads Artprice, a firm which closely monitors art market prices, agreed that the prank had probably increased the value of the work.

Banksy didn't destroy an artwork in the auction, he created one.

Today, October 11, Sotheby's fueled the continued, gripping saga of Banksy's recent stunt, where he deployed the self-destruction of a 2006 painting of his, just as the gavel banged down on its $1.3 million sale.

Sotheby's quoted the buyer as saying she was at first shocked, but began to realize that she would end up with her own piece of art history.

"Following his surprise intervention on the night, we are pleased to confirm the sale of the artist's newly-titled "Love is in the Bin", the first artwork in history to have been created live during an auction".
