Microsoft Co-Founder, Paul Allen, Has Died at 65

The billionaire philanthropist and investor's company Vulcan Inc. announced that Allen died in Seattle at 65-years-old from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma on Monday afternoon.

Allen's sister, Jody, released a statement through the company. "For all the demands on his schedule, there was always time for family and friends", the statement added.

Paul Allen, a Washington State University drop-out who had a ideal SAT score, convinced Bill Gates to drop out of Harvard and start Microsoft, and only left the company when he fell seriously ill in 1982.

Allen bought the Trail Blazers in 1988 for $70 million and the Seahawks in 1996 and was instrumental for both franchises moving forward. Allen was a sports fan who owned two professional sports teams, the NFL Seattle Seahawks and NBA Portland Trail Blazers.

"I choose optimism, I hope to be a catalyst not only by providing financial resources but also by fostering a sense of possibility", Allen said in 2015 about his efforts to help bring positive change to the world.

According to Forbes magazine, Allen was worth almost $22 billion at the time of his death, making him the world's fourth wealthiest person. Allen left the company in 1982 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan called Allen "a giant of the Northwest".

Allen was a philanthropist who donated billions of dollars for various causes including homelessness and environmental issues.

On their behalf Bill Hilf, CEO of Vulcan, which oversaw his businesses, said: "All of us who had the honor of working with Paul feel inexpressible loss today".

Mr Allen founded the Allen Institute for Brain Science, the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the Institute for Cell Science and Stratolaunch Systems, a space transportation venture.

In 2010 he publicly pledged to give away the majority of his fortune, saying he believed "those fortunate to achieve great wealth should put it to work for the good of humanity".
