O'Rourke borrowed the president's attack line from the 2016 primary against Cruz during the debate. Cruz noted O'Rourke is "the only Democratic Senate nominee in the country who has explicitly come out for impeaching President Trump".

Beto O'Rourke attacked Ted Cruz in a raucous Texas debate, calling him dishonest and resurrecting the senator's nickname of "Lyin" Ted'.

"Senator Cruz won't be honest with you".

Cruz laughed off the exchange saying it was obvious that O'Rourke needed to attack to try and reverse polls that show him fading.

Minutes into the debate, as Cruz accused O'Rourke of supporting a $10-a-barrel tax on oil, the El Paso congressman shot back that Cruz is "dishonest". Cruz is what we should be afraid of.

When O'Rourke said he wanted to expand federally funded health care to more Americans, Cruz said that would mean socialized medicine that would cost trillions and require sky-high tax increases.

"Every time there is a choice between left-wing national activists and the people of Texas, he goes with left-wing national activists", Cruz said. O'Rourke and most Democrats opposed the measure.

Cruz claimed that O'Rourke is the only Senate Democratic candidate this cycle who has explicitly supported Trump's impeachment. You were all talk and no action.

Cruz cited his work helping to pass the Republican tax reform bill previous year as an area where he has delivered for the state of Texas. "He is going to make up positions and votes that I've never held", O'Rourke said during the debate in San Antonio. But with polls showing him slipping farther behind just three weeks before the November 6 election, and six days before early voting starts in Texas, O'Rourke switched his approach. "But I'll tell you what, traveling the state of Texas, meeting people regardless of their walk of life, their background, their party affiliation, you have inspired me". The candidates sparred on taxes, US policy on climate change, immigration, judicial philosophy and health care.

Cue a clip of Cruz declaring that "I'm a big fan of eating White Castle burgers".
