Canada Becomes 2nd Country to Legalize Recreational Marijuana

Recreational cannabis is legal across the country.

The official said Tuesday that those convicted of possessing of 30 grams or less of marijuana will be eligible for a pardon, but they will have to apply for one.

Officials, who spoke on condition they not be identified by name, quietly admitted they are getting a lot of questions - from how Health Canada will handle complaints, to public awareness campaigns, to roadside impaired-driving tests.

Canadian provinces and municipalities have been given the task of determining where cannabis can be bought and consumed, which has created varying levels of legislative restriction across the country.

Medical use of the drug has been legal in the country since 2001, with the legislation meant to keep minors from purchasing the drug and profits away from dealers.

A patchwork of regulations has spread in Canada as each province takes its own approach within the framework set out by the federal government. Some are operating government-run stores, some are allowing private retailers, some both.

What does Canada have to say of the law?

In neighbouring USA, nine states and the District of Columbia have legalised marijuana.

As Canada welcomes legalization, supply shortages could develop, as happened in some USA states when legalization arrived. The province is selling the drug through an official website that's launching Wednesday.
