First lady’s plane lands safely after ‘mechanical issue’

About 10 minutes after takeoff, reporters noticed a thin haze of smoke and detected a burning smell, according to CNN. Secret Service agents rushed to the front of the plane, and press were handed wet towels to hold over their faces in case the smell was too strong.

First Lady Melania Trump returned to Washington, DC, after the cabin of her plane filled with smoke.

Reporters were told the plane suffered a "minor mechanical issue", that one crew member sid stemmed from a "malfunctioning comms unit", although the White House has yet to confirm the source of the issue.

The airplane was a Boeing C-32A.

Trump was headed to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, where she was scheduled to make remarks about neonatal abstinence syndrome.

The trip remains on for later Wednesday and the first lady will take a different plane, Grisham said.
