Trump Administration Aims to Erase All Rights for Transgender People

There are 1.4 million Americans who recognize themselves transgender, according to the Times.

Several agencies have withdrawn Obama-era policies that recognised gender identity in schools, prisons and homeless shelters.

LGBTQ activists from the National Center for Transgender Equality and partner organizations hold signs with the names of transgender people from across the country during a "We Will Not Be Erased" rally in front of the White House on Monday in Washington, DC.

A leaked Department of Health and Human Services memo that describes an effort to redefine sex in federal law as "a person's status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth" spawned a protest in New York City last night and another at the White House this afternoon. Members of the LGBTQ community and their supporters mobilized quickly to show support for transgender rights after the New York Times published news of an unreleased Trump administration memo that proposes a strict definition of gender based on a persons genitalia at birth. The new definitions would state that gender is "unchangeable" and only female and male identities exist.

The report alleges that the department argues the current lack of clarity allowed civil rights protections to be wrongfully extended to some individuals during the Obama administration.

"Transgender people are frightened", said Sarah Warbelow, legal director of the Human Rights Campaign, which presses for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Unnamed Trump administration officials told the Times that HHS is preparing to present the memo's definition of gender to the Justice Department by the end of this year.

Bolt offered deal with Central Coast Mariners
Reports surfaced mid-game Bolt was instead in Melbourne pondering the deal, which had been tabled by Mariners boss Shaun Mielekamp.

The policies were a "culmination of a series of unilateral, and frequently lawless, administration attempts to impose a new definition of what it means to be a man or a woman on the entire nation", he wrote in an opinion piece in the Daily Signal.

A memo circulated by the Department of Health and Human...

In 2016, Judge Reed O'Connor ruled on a challenge to a provision in the Affordable Care Act that forbade discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, and other characteristics.

But in recent discussions with the administration, civil rights groups, including Lambda Legal, have pointed to other court cases. The term "sex" refers to gender, which has since been expanded under the law to include sexual orientation and gender identity.

"Defining "sex" in this narrow language tailored to the talking points of anti-equality extremists is part of a deliberate strategy to eliminate federal protections for LGBTQ people", Griffin said.

The Obama administration enacted regulations and followed court rulings that protected transgender people from discrimination, upsetting religious conservatives.
