10-year-old girl accused of killing baby at day care

A 10-year-old girl is suspected in the death of an infant in northwestern Wisconsin. Kowalczyk said the girl told police she hurt the infant.

Officials say she accidentally dropped the baby and the infant started crying. "She proceeded to stomp on the six-month-old's head".

The girl, who was charged with first-degree intentional homicide, appeared in court Monday morning. He was pronounced dead November 1, according to the Tribune.

The accused was accompanied by her biological parents in court, where Judge James Isaacson ordered her to be detained on a $50,000 (£38,280) cash bond.

Wearing a colorful striped skirt, a black hoodie and pink sneakers, the girl buried her head in her mothers arms, moaning and crying as Chippewa County District Attorney Wade Newell described the charge against her.

The girl was staying with the family who runs the day care when the tragic death occurred.

The six-month-old was taken to Gillette Children's Hospital in Saint Paul, where he died two days later on 1 November.

A doctor who examined the youngster said his injuries had been deliberately inflicted, with Chippewa County Sheriff's Office quickly focusing its investigation on the 10 year-old girl.

KWQC reported the girl was living at the foster home which also served as a daycare centre in the town of Wheaton.
