Election Day to test Democratic resistance in Trump era

The writer, being a woman political journalist from India, now transplanted to the USA, is in a unique position to observe the three aspects that are critical to defining this presidency: chauvinism, gunslinger politics, and immigration.

The Midterm elections 2018 are the first time USA voters have been able to vote nationally since Donald Trump stepped into office.

Following the outbreak of the #MeToo movement denouncing sexual assault, and the massive women's protests against Trump, women voters and candidates will play critical roles in the first major election since Trump took power.

Sending thousands of troops to the US-Mexico border to counter a migrant "invasion", questioning the validity of birthright citizenship, and spreading stories of scandalous murders by undocumented immigrants: Trump and his Republicans are making immigration a closing argument of the campaign.

"She is a money machine, and she may pull it off, but it's up to the voters today", Chaffetz said.

Donald Trump would like to believe it's all about him.

Mr Trump appears to have decided that immigration is the crucial issue that will turn out the coalition of voters that handed him an unlikely victory in the 2016 election.

USA tech companies are stepping up security and efforts to fight disinformation campaigns to prevent online troublemakers from trying to divide voters and discredit democracy.

A debate about whether Trump's biting rhetoric encouraged extremists erupted in the campaign's final weeks after pipe bombs were mailed to his top political rivals allegedly by a Trump supporter who was arrested and charged, and 11 people were fatally shot at a Pittsburgh synagogue. Despite reports from the ground by the media of the struggles of the people walking almost 5,000 miles to the American border, queries are raised on how come they appear so clean and not exhausted at all. "I would like to have a much softer tone", he said.

Trump is also hammering away at the anxieties of women voters. But if the GOP loses its majority it will need to to go on defense to protect Trump.

At a recent rally, he called attention to his predecessor Barack Obama's middle name, which is Hussein - pandering to a long-running trope among conspiracy-minded conservatives that Mr Obama is secretly a Muslim. His current approval rating among Republican voters has reportedly touched a whopping 89 percent. Republicans now hold 51 against the Democrats' 49 (with two independents).

Secondly, it could lead to a string of damaging congressional investigations being launched by House committees controlled by the Democrats, on everything from Mr Trump's tax returns to the business interests of his family. Five of those seven seats were also held by Republicans.

It may not be easy for Democrats to take the House majority, since they will have to win a string of districts in Republican territory and get strong turnout, but they head into Tuesday in position to do so - even if narrowly.

But despite the fact that there are more than 7 million new jobs since President Trump took office - with many going to Hispanic workers - voters really don't ask the question: Is the economy better under Trump?

Many people have already voted.

USA midterm results are expected to come out tomorrow, after a day of feverent voting.

"The Democrats will do quite well in the House of Representatives, in the governorships and state legislatures".

Democratic Rep. Kirsten Sinema and Republican Rep. Martha McSally are battling to replace retiring Arizona Sen. Handel's challenger, Democrat Lucy McBath, is a gun-control activist and African American who could be helped by a possible surge in black voter turnout led by enthusiasm for Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, according to Wasserman. This year they filed a lawsuit to overturn what remains of the ACA and it was backed by the justice department, which said it concurred with the need to end the law's guarantees that insurance companies could not deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.
