ATP Finals: Rafael Nadal ruled out of London event

The world No 2 cited an abdominal injury as the reason and then decided after consulting with his doctor in Barcelona that he would immediately undergo keyhole surgery on a separate issue in his right ankle.

The ATP Finals take place in London on November 11-18, with Group Hewitt matches kicking off the action on Sunday.

"Hello all, I'm writing these words at the end of my season", he said in the first of a series of tweets posted on Monday afternoon. "I couldn't be happier to finish the season like this".

Rafael Nadal is now set for a period of recovery until he begins preparations for the 2019 season.
