Democrats, though, have already signaled a long list of investigations, from the president's finances to his immigration policy to lingering questions over Russian election meddling and the 2016 Trump campaign's overtures. What if Trump's Republicans do surprisingly well, and the Democrats fall short of taking back the House?

Now we're getting to the some of the nation's marquee races: the initial returns from the Texas US Senate race, plus four competitive US House races in New Jersey and another eight in Pennsylvania.

District 1: Incumbent Sig Hutchinson, a Democrat, received 61.40 percent of the votes against Republican challenger Greg Jones, who had 35.51 percent. Rep. Marsha Blackburn was able to hold Tennessee's seat for Republicans, as current Sen.

Perhaps the most striking finding of the poll is that 43 percent of American mid-term voters named healthcare as the top issue for them.

Fundraising, polls and history were not on the president's side.

While the economy continues to thrive, Trump has spent much of the campaign's final days railing against a caravan of Latin American immigrants seeking asylum at the United States border.

Early Tuesday, East Coast voters had to contend with stormy weather, which normally reduces turnout, but there were morning reports of people waiting 30 minutes or longer to vote in Georgia, Florida and other states. It was the first national election in the United States since the 2016 race in which Russian Federation interfered, according to U.S. intelligence agencies, with a campaign of hacking and propaganda to sow discord, harm the Democratic presidential candidate and boost Trump's chances.

How many seats are needed for a majority?

Fox News declared at 9:45 p.m. that Democrats had gained at least 23 seats in the lower chamber, giving Democrats control of the House for the first time since 2010.

Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin in West Virginia and Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin won re-election. Democrat Andrew Gillum is hoping to become the state's first African American governor. Menendez won in the heavily Democratic state despite a federal bribery indictment that prosecutors dropped this year after a mistrial.

Democrats are most optimistic about the House, a sprawling battlefield extending from Alaska to Florida. Eastern, NBC News projected that Jennifer Wexton had defeated Barbara Comstock in her bid to represent Virginia's 10th district. Those voters have increasingly fled Trump's Republican Party, turned off by his chaotic leadership style and xenophobic rhetoric. In another early race to watch, retired Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath took on three-term Rep. Andy Barr in the Kentucky district that extends beyond Lexington. Almost 200 Democratic women are running for Congress this year, compared to just 59 Republicans. "His actions, his verbage, he's clearly the focal point", said Tim Phillips, president of the Koch-backed Americans for Prosperity, which has poured millions into certain races this cycle to help preserve the Republican majority.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in NY, 29, a Latina who defeated incumbent Joseph Crowley in a decisive primary, is set to become the youngest House member ever elected.

Trump has crisscrossed the country in the weeks leading up to Election Day, hosting "Make America Great Again" rallies to campaign for Republicans in an effort to maintain the majority of the House and Senate, and pick up or hold some governor's mansions along the way.
