Georgia marching band members spell racial slur during halftime performance

Several members of a Georgia high school marching band are in hot water after the large letters attached to their sousaphones spelled out a racial slur during a halftime show Friday night.

Members of Gwinnett County's Brookwood High School marching band typically spell "broncos", the school mascot, with instrument covers while waiting in the stands. But this time, the covers were used spell out a four-letter racial slur that starts with the letter "c".

"For those of you who have attended our games, you may have noticed that the sousaphones (a brass instrument similar to a tuba) wear covers in the stands to show school spirit", Principal William Ford Jr. wrote in the letter to parents.

Ford told FOX5 in an email that the school identified the four students who participated and two more who gave false information to staff. He says the band director wasn't on the field with performers that night so rules weren't followed.

She added that the "B" and the "R" needed to spell "bronco" were nowhere to be seen, and pointed out that the word that ultimately appeared is extremely offensive. "However, they acknowledged that they knew this racist term was not acceptable".

The question, of course, is do the Steelers really need Bell? The Steelers are set to play the Panthers on Thursday night. I have to block some of the best players on the best defense in the world.

"Haven't heard it in years, it's to belittle black people, it's an insult", she said.

There was an ugly incident at halftime of a Georgia high school game on Friday, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

The six students will be disciplined with punishments "commensurate with their involvement in this incident", Ford said.

Ford previously had apologized to parents and the community in a letter, saying the halftime show was "hurtful and disrespectful to audience members". "I don't even know if this is a black-white issue, because my understanding is a couple of them were not white, so they just did something that was wrong, and they need to be held accountable". I will not stop until these students are expelled.
